Oak Class

Welcome to Years 5 & 6

These years are an exciting time for our children. We focus on developing skills and independence in the core subjects and across the whole curriculum.

We also have lots of exciting experience for the children, such as residential visits and projects.

Reading is something we love to do and we really hope you can share this experience with your child. We ask you to listen to or read to your child as much as you can and write a note in their diary to tell us about their experience and understanding. When reading with your child at home, you will have a range of books to choose from. Each child will take home a Lexile book that they have chosen. At The Marton Academy, gaining enjoyment from reading is really important to us, therefore each week the children choose a book from the library that particularly interests them.

School Diaries

These are used to communicate between parents and teachers. The teachers will check the children’s diary once per week. Please write a note when your child has read and comment on their understanding of the text. We really appreciate as much reading as you are able to do with your child. When they have read, please ask them questions about what they have read to make sure they understand the text.

Homework

Spellings will be given out each week on a Monday and children will be tested on these the following Monday. You will find your child’s spellings in their Home School Diary that they will stick in each week. We ask that children practise their times tables a minimum of 3 times a week and that children are listened to read, each day, for a minimum of 10 minutes. There will also be an additional ‘Fluent in Five’ maths activity each week (set Friday to Friday).

Uniform

We pride ourselves on our uniform. Children should all come to school wearing full school uniform: a grey blazer, a Marton tie, black, white or grey socks, flat, black shoes with a strap or laces, black or grey trousers/skirt and a white shirt or blouse. On P.E days, children should have a white P.E. top, shorts/jogging bottoms and trainers or plimsolls.

Class Dojo

Class Dojo is used to share learning that takes place in school. We will regularly post pictures of work or activities that the children get up to. The platform also gives you the opportunity to share your children’s achievements and independent learning they do. These are wonderful opportunities for your child to present to class about what they have learnt or achieved outside of school. These moments promote great discussion around the subject area.

Religious Education

We use NATRE RE to compliment our Religious Education curriculum. Parents and carers should be aware that they have the right to withdraw their child from all or part of RE teaching. Please speak to Mr Green should you wish to discuss withdrawing your child.
